So the new Nikon D5 specs are making their internet rounds. Some are pretty certain, some not so much, BUT there are two KEY attributes the D5 MUST have.
The sensor is going to be 20MP. That seems pretty much a given, and I’m fine with that. A small jump in resolution, similar to the small 4MP jump from the Nikon D3s / D3 to the Nikon D4 / D4s. As long as we keep getting better high ISO ability, and maybe even a little better dynamic range, I’m good with the D5 being 20 Megapixels.
The Dx series is Nikon’s high speed, high ISO, flagship. You want high megapixels, you go for the Nikon D810.
Fancy, new focusing module with even better AF than that in the already stellar Nikon D4s (let’s hope so anyways). Yup, ok with that.
Top native ISO of 102,400, making it the equal of the incredible Sony a7S MkII. Would be nice for the D5 to beat it, and not just play catch-up, especially since it’ll be coming out months after the a7s Mk2. I mean, by the time the Nikon D5 hits the stores, the Sony a7s MkIII will be announced and it’ll probably move the bar up once again.
15fps… Wow! Faster than I ever need, but I think this ought to please even the most demanding sports and wildlife shooters out there.
Here’s the BIG one though, the one that I think is LONG over-due, but extremely necessary for Nikon to stay competitive. 4K! Yes, finally! The Nikon D5 is rumored to have 4K video. It’s not a sure thing, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed. I really like Nikon, and they need to start incorporating 4K into all their cameras to stay relevant and competitive. Fingers crossed.
The MOST important specs here for me are the high ISO abilities and the 4K.
Nikon’s Dx line are their high ISO flagships, and they NEED to be industry leading. In other words, don’t just match an existing, older competitor (Sony a7s MkII), BEAT THE SNOT OUT OF IT.
And 4K… well, this is the end of 2015, going into 2016. My sub-$1,000 Panasonic G7 has great 4K video capability. At the very least, Nikon’s flagship should too.
