There’s no shortage of articles and videos all over the internet claiming the Sony a7R II as the top camera of 2015, “2015’s photo world changer”, and many other praise-heaping titles, and no doubt, it is an excellent camera.
BUT, the Sony a7R II is NOT my pick for the 2015 Camera of the Year. That titles goes to the humble little (and humbly priced) Panasonic G7.
Consider that the Pansonic G7 with 14-42mm kit lens has been priced at ONLY $597.99 for most of this Holiday Season and some shops like B&H Photo have even offered a $150 gift card included in that price, and you start to see why.
Then consider that the G7 does 4K video, in camera, with no need for any external recorders or other equipment, and a VERY nice 4K at that! No other camera offers 4K at this price point, even now as we go into 2016, and certainly not for 2015.
And then there’s the image quality. The Panasonic G7’s M4/3 sensor delivers some pretty amazing image quality, so good in fact that it can play in the same arena as the big boys sporting APS-C and full frame sensors. I’ve shot it professionally with VERY good results.
But wait! Let’s not forget the auto focus. The G7 inherits its lightning fast AF system from the GH4, the Panasonic flagship. It’s SUPER FAST, DEADLY ACCURATE, and just a pleasure to shoot with. Turn on the face detection, and it literally makes me chuckle seeing how fast the G7 locks on and fires when my kids are racing around.
In most situations, my Panasonic G7 is faster and more accurate than ANY OTHER camera I’ve shot with, and that’s most of them out there.
In conjunction with the incredibly fast AF, the Panasonic G7’s fully articulated, touch screen LCD is simply marvelous to shoot with. Turn on the tap and shoot function, touch anywhere on the screen, and watch the G7 instantly lock focus and take the shot. I can’t emphasize enough how much I LOVE this feature. Throw on a fast prime like the Panasonic 42.5mm f1.7, set the aperture to it’s maximum f1.7, and tap on your subject’s eye for a perfectly focused, shallow depth of field portrait. I LOVE IT!
Then there’s the new Post Focus feature Panasonic has recently introduced that let’s you select your focus point AFTER you take the photo. You really have to see it in action to believe it. It’s simply incredible. I love it when new technology makes me feel like a kid in a candy store, and Post Focus does exactly that.
And that’s just some of my favorite features the G7 has. There’s also 4K burst, DFD technology in the AF system, a high resolution 2,360 OLED viewfinder, programmable function buttons, and a host of other neat stuff packed into the little Panasonic G7.
ALL for UNDER $600 with a lens!
Add it all up, and you get industry leading technology in a small and lightweight body for one heck of a low price. There’s nothing that can touch it for VALUE for your money, and that’s why the G7 is my choice for 2015 Camera of the Year.
… PLUS, it’s just a whole lot of fun to shoot with 🙂
